That this collection will not be as full as it should be is accounted for by the suddenness of the decease of the author, by the confusion in which his papers were necessarily left, and by the haste with which circumstances have compelled this compilation to be made. For the same and other reasons, no attempt has been made at classification, and it may be that omitted poems will have to be added at the last mo ment. General Halpine had never been in the habit of collecting or preserving his works; his pen was so busy, his brain so fertile, his time so fully occupied.
