The establishment of precedence is of very early Eastern origin, and was admitted amongst the laws of Justinian. There are no authentic records of its existence in recognised form in England prior to the Norman invasion, although distinction of rank and place was observed by our earliest Saxo'n and British ancestors, derived undoubtedly, through the various sections of the human family, from the primitive ages.
