The Pilgrimage novel series Book V, The Templar, begins with Gabriel, the lord of Belleme, recently returned from the Holy Land, from the Castle Chastellet. The Templar is on a mission to warn the English heir apparent Richard the Lion Heart, and his half-brother Geoffrey, the Duke of Brittany of a plot to assassinate them. Unfortunately, before he can deliver the warning, someone tries to kill him. Alone and hurt, he finds help at Bardney Monastery, where he recuperates but finds that he has no memory of his life before coming to, in a shallow grave. Desperate for answers and not knowing who; he can trust, he tries to sort through the pieces of his memory as they slowly come back to him before there is another attempt on his life.
