Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The Performance of a Harrington Forced Draft Chain Grate Stoker: A Thesis
Poor efficiency is the general result when boilers are run considerably under or over rating. Boiler manufacturers have found from experience that for a certain number of square feet of heating surface their is a definite amount of grate area required. In other words the ratio between heating surface and grate area is fixed. Therefore, when a plant is operating at half rating, the grate area is twice as large as that required for correct operation; and vice versa, when running at twice rating the grate area is only half the theoretically required.
