The Overthrow of Hawaii is a work of fiction based on actual historic events in late nineteenth century Hawaii. Jack Powers, a powerful attorney with a deep-seated hatred of the native Hawaiian people, organizes a secret agency to overthrow the Queen of Hawaii. David Coe, an intellectually gifted young lawyer and Powers' protégé, admires Powers and covets his wealth and lavish life style, but, raised with a strong religious background, is eventually overcome by the injustices of the overthrow. He must decide whether to continue pursuit of his materialistic goals; to turn against his mentor, jeopardizing a promising legal career as well as his life to help the native Hawaiians save their homeland; or to follow Malia, a captivating love interest with ulterior motives, who presses him to leave Hawaii with her. The true historic elements of this story created a powerful, unifying feeling among the Hawaiian people that, to this day, is alive and vibrant.
