While the writers of that treatise gave a detailed and elaborate account of the development of the jaws and their anatomical constituents, that por tion devoted to the origin and formation of the dental follicle was in many respects incomplete, and in some particulars erroneous. The improved methods of. Preparing sections for microscopic examination which have since been adopted, together with the experience gained by many years of study, which one of these authors has since devoted to this and kindred subjects, has enabled him, with the aid of his eminent colaborer, not only to correct the errors of that work, but also to describe these parts more minutely, and with greater exactness than had been hitherto pos sible. While the present work traverses a portion of the ground gone over by the previous Writers, it is, nevertheless, a distinct memoir, rendered more comprehensive, and more complete in detail, by the study of the development of the dental system not only in man, but in many other mammifera.
