Having disposed of that question, the next object was to demonstrate, from authentic records, that the germs of art existed in the British isles at a period long antecedent to the Roman visitation and that their development, with that of civilization gene rally, was severely checked, first by the Roman in vaders, then by the Saxons and Danes, and for a time by the Norman Conquest.
