Excerpt from The Order and Ceremonial of the Most Holy and Adorable Sacrifice of the Mass: Explained in a Dialogue Between a Priest and a Catechumen
The little Manual, a new edition of which is now offered to the public, was compiled by me, more than ten years ago, when I was preparing for the priesthood at St. Edmund's College. I should hardly have ventured upon republishing it, but for the encouragement it has received in the circumstance of the chief part of it having obtained, in the form of an accurate Italian translation, the official "imprimatur" of the Holy See. The translation in question was made in 1855, by a young student at Rome, named Lorenzo Santarelli, under the immediate eye of one of the Professors of the Roman College.
The portion of the Manual to which this approbation extends has been printed in this new edition, for the sake of distinction, in a larger type. One or two passages, which occur in the approved translation, have been omitted in this edition as unnecessary; and one which is emitted in the translation solely on the ground of being more applicable to a Protestant than to a Catholic country has been, for that reason, retained. The rest of the work, which was not included in the Italian translation, and consequently not submitted to the judgment of the Roman authorities, has undergone a new and complete revision, and received several additions and corrections.
