Only in a few instances have the results been utilised for practical purposes connected with society as a whole or with large sections of the community. For example, the pre-war rations of our armies were fixed after a series of experiments on the food requirements of soldiers on the march. Again, in the valuable studies on poverty by Booth, Rowntree and others, full details are given of the diet of the poor and very poor, and deductions are made as to the sufficiency or otherwise of the earnings of these classes.
