The District Nursing Service is comprised of some 18,000 nurses, including nursing auxillaries, at an estimated total cost of about #260 million per year. There has been growing concern about whether the existing grade mix in District Nursing appropriately reflects the nature of current and anticipated workload.;This report considers the roles of qualified and non qualified nursing staff in the District Nursing Service; to identify major functions and tasks and to make recommendations on the appropriate grade/skill mix required for them; to identify efficient and cost effective management practices and to make recommendations; and to produce an action plan to facilitate the achievement of change by Health Authorities.
