An edition Of copies of the report on the nine teen local governments IN chicago was exhausted in less than a year from its date Of publication, which was December, 1913. This second edition is printed in order that requests for copies of the publication may be met.
Since the original report was issued the number of governments in Chicago has increased from 19 to 22 and the number of local elective Officials has grown from 236 to 251. There have been other changes that call for notice.
The fact that the number of governing bodies and Of elective officials is increasing, in face of the public demand for unification and the short ballot, is so startling as to challenge attention. It is evident that the movement for consolidation of governing bodies Should be pushed with more vigor. It is gratifying to note that the Forest Pre serve Act was put into effect without the creation Of a new governing body, the Board of Cook County Commission ers having been made the agency for acquiring outlying wooded areas adapted to park uses. Consolidation of the park governments with the City Of Chicago should be brought about without further delay.
