Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The New Virginians, Vol. 2 of 2
Just as I open my desk, E. Calls to me to bring the sweet-potatoes. He has got the hot bed ready for them. They want 'a hotbed all to themselves, and can bear a heat which would kill anything else, being tropical in habit and habitat. I rush out with the box of tubers which we had carefully looked over the day before. I give a final examination, and hand the tubers as he places them. Then I get tallies to mark the kinds, - rcd, white, and yellow. The yellow are by far the best they taste like chest nuts, only not so ?oury. The white grow as big as a child's head, but are poor in quality.
