Jones writes in the Preface: The so-called Natural and Supernatural are subjects which have been the rallying points for all thinkers in past time; and as the knowledge acquired by our ancestors, cannot be conveyed in the blood, and appear in form and features, each generation has had to gather and observe for itself. The result has been, that circumstances have driven men of the clearest analytical minds into certain courses of study; and so have given an impress and direction to the thoughts of the age in which they lived, whether scientific, warlike, commercial or religious. This book is written for the scientific inquirer, the man who reasons from effects to causes; not for the pedant, whose brain-organ of self-esteem is so large as to lead him to imagine that he possesses the wisdom of God bodily, that all nature must be material and visible, that there is no power beyond the seen material...the subjects are vitally interesting to every thinking human being, as he lays hold of the problem, Is Man Immortal?
