Publisher's Synopsis
Having failed her detective's exam, Constable Caroline Lees is taken under the wing of Detective Ray Barden. Together, they investigate a drunken brawl outside a riverside pub. Discovering her boyfriend Harry was involved, Lees lies to her partner and tries to shift the blame onto an innocent woman. As a body washes ashore, the investigation becomes the hunt for a killer, and Lees doesn't know how much longer she can keep her boyfriend out of the limelight.
A closer examination of the body reveals a stab wound that turns the case into a murder investigation. As she falls deeper into the lies, Lees knows her only chance of saving her career is to keep Barden well away from Harry. Playing a dangerous game between a true detective and a failed one, Lees can at last see that being a good detective is perhaps not something she was ever really cut out for.
