It is now more than three years since Sir Charles Lyall's edition of the bin/ad daliyat was published by the Clarendon Press at Oxford. In the Preface to Vol. 1, written shortly before his death, which took place on Sept. 1, 1920, the editor announced that indexes of personal and place-names, of poetical quotations, and of selected words, would appear separately and later. These indexes I had already begun to prepare, in. Accordance with his directions, but when I mentioned the matter, soon after his death, to the authorities of the Clarendon Press, they informed me that they had never contemplated the' publication of a volume of indexes and that the printing of such a work would involve an expenditure which they were unwilling to incur. How it came about that so important a question had not been definitely settled during the life-time of Sir Charles I was unable to ascertain. Since, however, he had always regarded the publication of the indexes as indispensable, I completed th\e task which I had undertaken, and the work now appears under the patronage of the Trustees of the E. J. W. Gibb Memorial. For their generous and timely support I beg to offerthem my sincerest thanks.
