Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The Mock Auction: Ossawatomie Sold, a Mock Heroic Poem
That, that was not the time for virtue, In which had culminated few. He said, it was in history, P'r'aps written by mystery, Or Medium, or Witch, may be, Who before, betwixt, behind can see; One born with caul over the eyes, Can see out of sight - if he tries. Trumpeter dwelt on these what-note, Like painter, gazing in gallipots, Sees visions gloriously bright In raw-umber and silver-white; And, from the mess, a picture seems In majesty to rise, - it beams, It was a thing of mystic life; It surprised, not pleased, the palette-knife, Would make the lofty easel sick, And freely vomited the maulstick; Yet, it did pretty well subserve His ideal, of a chef d' oeuvre. Now, from these aforementioned flaws, He goes to work to frame wise saws. To suit the really rotten times, And get himself and friends some dimes.
