The first edition of this publication, consecutively num bered from one to three hundred, both inclusive, while appar ently complete, contained no detailed chart, and the most im portant topographic features at the utmost limit of the Mis souri Basin remained unexamined.
During the year 1896 surveys and explorations at and above the Red Rock lakes Montana, were continued, pre paratory to a more comprehensive description of an interesting mountainous region scarcely known and meagerly understood by geographic students and historians.
