Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The Mirror of the Century
Certainly if it had nothing to recommend it but my signature it would be little worth; but as a guide to the thoughts of twelve great artists whose work covers the momentous Nineteenth Century, and the part that England has played therein, a study of the Novel in its many aspects, from Jane Austen to Mr. W. E. Norris, may have some small merit.
In the great country of your birth, in so far as we can judge, all 'the Century is present somewhere within its geographical borders at any given moment. It is not so with us. Much has died: it is astonishing to see how much. In these matters the statistician can help us but little: the artist is by far the better guide.
