Caldwell was appointed to the charge of the Engineer Department in the Centre Division of the Madras Army in March 1811, and next year was entrusted with the repair of the fortress of Seringapatam. In 1813, he obtained the important post of Special Surveyor of Fortresses. In 1816 he was nominated a commissioner for the restoration of the French settlement on the Coro mandel and Malabar coasts, and the same year became Acting Chief Engineer of Madras. He was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1815 in 1887 was made a and in 1848 a Grand Cross of that Order.
