Excerpt from The Metric System of Weights and Measures
In 1875 an agreement, known as the International Metric Convention. Was entered into by eighteen contracting states-since increased by successive adhesions to twenty two - hy which the proposals of the geodetic conference were adopted. In conformity with this agreement an international bureau of weights and measures was established at Sevres, on the banks of the Seine near Paris, and is now maintained at the common expense of the contracting states.
