The commercial importance attached to the magnetic properties of iron and steel in the construction of electric - al machinery makes necessary an accurate and quick method for testing the qualities of all iron used. The most important property, and one which is common to all samples, is its tendency to persist in any magnetic state in which it has been previously placed. Thus, when a sample has been.subjected to a magnetizing field of a certain strength, on the withdrawal of the f'ie1r1, much of the magnetism remains.
