The field is so wide, and the details, with their local colouring, so multiplied that it will be strange if no errors have crept in; but I have done my best to insure accuracy, and, above all, to maintain fairness and catholicity.
In the course of the narrative I acknow ledge my indebtedness to various authors; it would be too long a list to print were I to name all the books I have consulted, and the many tracts and pamphlets which have yielded me fugitive gleanings.
