IT is counted as a prime merit in Montesquieu that he separated biography from history. It would be an easy thing, but also certainly a mistake, to. Say that to write the history of William Howard Russell is to write the history of the Crimean War, the Mutiny, the American Civil War, the austro-prussian War, and the F ranco-german War. I have preferred to follow, at a respectful distance, the example of Montesquieu the background of those wars has been sketched, and the policy which led to them and the episodes in the fighting have been examined or described, in exact accordance with what seemed to be their relevance to Russell's career.
