In the following pages I have endeavored to re produce, as nearly as' possible in their original form, eight of twelve lectures delivered, without notes, on Sunday evenings, in the winter of 1912 at the meeting-house of the Society for Ethical Culture of New York. It is in response to the writ ten request of several hundred persons that these lectures are now published.
