Publisher's Synopsis
Isaac Thomas Hecker was born in New York City, December 18, 1819. His father was a German Lutheran who never went to church: his mother belonged first to the Reformed Dutch Church and later became a Methodist. Their talented son first learned type-setting, but afterwards became a baker. At the age of twenty-three he joined the community at Brook Farm, hoping to make up for the deficiencies of his early education. This biography gives a clear report of the influences, internal and external, which brought Father Hecker into the Roman Catholic Church. He was a natural orator and an ideal missionary, and did telling work, which is described in detail.
