Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The Life of Andrew Martin Fairbairn
The writing of this book has been a labour of love. When it was first suggested to me I shrank from the task as one altogether beyond my powers. But I was impelled to undertake it in the end, not only by the wishes of Dr. Fairbairn's family, but by a deep sense of loyalty to one who was to me, as to so many others, both a master and a friend. This, however, has only increased the difficulty of the work. It is never easy to write about those we, have admired and loved. The desire to avoid partiality often leads to the other extreme, and I am conscious that my attempts at appreciation may some times seem to err on the side of caution. I have tried to present a true portrait, and I may say that, in the effort to do so, I have come to appreciate far more deeply than I did before, not only the great intellectual capacity of the man, but also the essential nobility and simple beauty of his character and life.
