The mutineers were so strong as, not only to overcome all opposition but to compel the three regiments named to join their ranks; when, numbering 1,300 strong, the march was taken up for Philadelphia via Princeton. Wayne immediately dispatched two of his leading officers to Philadelphia, to apprise Congress of the movement. He wrote hurriedly to Washington detailing the particulars Irving says the men were under the influence of liquor. We do not know his authority for this statement.
