Publisher's Synopsis

The Lenbachhaus Book published in conjunction with its reinauguration in 2013 presents all departments of the Stadtische Galerie im Lenbacchaus collections in a single representative volume. Founded as a modest museum for works bearing a direct relation to Munich, the institution residing in the former villa of the "prince of painters" Franz von Lenbach (1836-1904) is now world-renowned for its stunningly rich collection of paintings by the members of the Blue Rider as well as the no less eminent and unique selection of contemporary art in its holdings. The book presents chief works of these two foci together with the museum's important collections of works of 19th-century art, Munich art nouveau, New Objectivity, and Joseph Beuys. Over 150 color plates lay out a panorama of the museum's masterworks; brief remarks introduce the reader to the individual departments.
