I have collected the authorities in all the States of the Union, and the decisions of the English Courts so far as they appeared pertinent to the system of Building Associa tions adopted in this country. From them all, I have labored to construct a work of general and particular use fulness, aiming at the elaboration of fundamental principles of universal applicability, as well as the statement, with precision and simplicity, of the variances noticeable under the laws and decisions Of the several States. I-have, however, striven for completeness in yet another direction, - in touching upon and stating the law concern ing all obvious matters involved in the management and business, the internal and external relations of Building Associations. My purpose in doing so, was to render the treatise not only useful to the profession, but also, in a measure, a compendium in the hands of laymen interested in and occupied with the affairs of these institutions.
