This account is of the men and officers of the Seventh Wisconsin Regiment serving in the American Civil War. It is not only a military history; it is the story of the struggle to make sense of war and the sacrifice that must go with it. It culminates in 1863 where the unit is down to barely 400 effectives. It is here that one of these soldiers attains Americaas new honor. The drama unfolds in 1861 before the new Wisconsin State House with a call for volunteers. By August, the regiment numbers more than 1,000 men and is soon called as the harvest is near. With autumn looming, the regiment arrives at Washington, D.C., below the unfinished new Capitol.
