Gwen is a young widow whose husband was killed in a tragic boating accident. A year after his death, when she discovers that her husband's former firm is being investigated for bank fraud, she begins to wonder whether his death really was an accident. She learns that he was suspicious of some of his colleagues for their questionable practices. With the help of a retired police officer and an NYPD forensic detective, she begins to explore the evidence, contributing to the investigation from material stored on her husband's computer. As she becomes more deeply involved in the world of criminal justice, she begins to see possibilities for her herself as she seeks to find purpose for her own life. Above all, she wants to clear her husband's name, both for herself and for her husband's family. Her quest for the truth takes her from New York police headquarters to a federal grand jury and finally to a criminal trial. Encouraged by her friends, she also finds consolation in a new romantic relationship that comes to her unexpected along the way.
