Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The Kingdom of the Barotsi, Upper Zambezia: A Voyage of Exploration in Africa, Returning by the Victoria Falls, Matabeleland, the Transvaal, Natal, and the Cape
Captain Bertrand's book being a journal, and written largely in the present historical tense, which is seldom pleasing to English ears, I have substituted the preterite throughout the greater part of the volume, preserving the present tense in certain narrative passages. Again, it being a journal, I have also preserved the natural laconism of the original.
