Publisher's Synopsis

This study represents the quest for the historical Keynes, following the story of an argument which arose out of the performance of the British economy in the period of depression between the wars. The starting point for this book was an essay by Peter Clarke called "The Politics of Keynesian Economics, 1924-31" published in "High and Low Politics in Modern Britain" (Oxford 1983). One theme of the essay was the importance of the political context in understanding the theoretical position Keynes adopted in his "Treatise on Money" (1930) and this is matched in this book with an essay along the same lines, covering the years in which Keynes produced "The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money" (1936).;The book aims to provide an account of Keynes' thinking in the years that led up to the "General Theory" and to make it comprehensible to specialists and non-specialists alike.
