Publisher's Synopsis
In the 1830's, Michigan's fertile ground and lush forests attracted hundreds of settlers from the eastern states, and Charles Broas was among the first. On a harrowing journey he brought his family from New York State to western Michigan, a land that was both welcoming and forbidding. In Volume II his son Levi tells of their efforts to create a homestead in this untamed wilderness. The Flat River area in Ionia County provided clean water and fertile soil. While trying to rebuild their lives, the Broas family was forced to brave the vagaries of Michigan weather, the deadly ague virus, a thieving family of vagabonds, and the irrational hatred of two brothers seeking to destroy them.
