Largeness of the opportunity, - of using unworthily the precious moments which fortune has be stowed on me. My choice of subject has not, I fear, lessened this hazard, for l have chosen to speak to you of one of the most significant men of the past cen tury, whether we consider him as a person, as an investigator or as a public benefactor. I pray you, therefore, deal gently with the shortcomings of an undertak ing so difficult and ambitious as that of estimating the in?uence of a great career on the advance of medical science.
