Fusion considered from the general standpoint of sili cates is sharply defined only for some definite minerals; even in many silicates it is a more or less gradual transi tion from the solid to the semi-liquid or liquid condition, and therefore, in a heterogeneous rock, like clay, even though all of its constituents were reduced to uniform extreme fineness, fusion must, in the nature of the case, cover a considerable temperature interval.
