India, named from the river Indus, contains an area of square miles, and, excluding Russia, is as large as Europe, or as that part of the United States lying Area and east of the Rocky Mountains. It is triangular in Coast Line shape, the great Himalayas forming the base, and the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal the two sides. Each side of this triangle is about miles long, and the greatest length and breadth of the land also is about miles. It extends from the eighth to the thirty-fifth parallel of north latitude. It has a coast line of miles.
