The discussion is not limited to technical military and naval development as the author aims to include political, diplomatic and social aspects of the theme since they are significant features of British life in the 20th century. The volume ends when a major change took place in Britain's defensive arrangements. This occurred when Winston Churchill, in his capacity as First Lord of the Admiralty, agreed to assume control of the home air defences in September 1914.
