Publisher's Synopsis

Spurred by his love of education, James Hunsicker, as a young farm boy born in 1868, began teaching at age 16 to put himself through college in Pennsylvania. He retired from teaching high school math and Latin in Colorado, at age 88. The narrative follows the lives of James's ancestors for three centuries from the 1600s, including Quakers and Mennonites who fled to the New World to avoid religious persecution around 1700. Called to a parallel career as a Reformed pastor, James established a church in Eckert, Colorado, which is still vibrant 100 years later. He married Kate Bromer, the daughter of a wealthy clothing manufacturer. As pioneers, they, and their six children, endured primitive living conditions in the early 20th century as they made homes in Kansas and then in Eckert (not long after the removal of the Ute Indians). This story shares the family's daily lives plus coping with their "Trouble" (an out of wedlock pregnancy), the Great Depression, James's heartbreaking loss of his soul-mate, and the differences they made in the lives of others.
