Excerpt from The History of the Puritans, or Protestant Non-Conformists, From the Death of Queen Elizabeth to the Beginning of the Civil War in 1642, Vol. 2: An Account of Their Principles; Their Attempts for a Further Reformation in the Church; Their Sufferings; And the Lives and Characters of Their Principle Divines
Secondly, to their Ready adherence to the Doc trines of Calvin, and the Synod of Dort, in the points of Predet'lination and Grace, againl't the mo dern interpretations of A'rminius and his Followers. The Court Divines fell in with the latter, and were thought not only to deviate from the principles of the firl't Reformers, but to attempt a coalition with the Church of Rome while mol't of the Country Clergy being fiiffin their old opinions (though other wife well enough affected to the Difcipline and Cere monies of the Church) were in a manner lhut out from all preferment, and branded with the name of Do�lrinal Puritans.
