Excerpt from The History of the First New Jersey Cavalry, (Sixteenth Regiment, New Jersey Volunteers)
General's office, after passing through ninety-two (92) of the ninety-seven (97) actions in which the regiment was engaged. Though soiled and tattered, it has a glory that belongs alone to itself and the men who carried and followed it so bravely; and it will not be strange if their blood is stirred as they look upon it.
The book is dedicated to as true a man and as noble a Governor as New Jersey ever had. Standing at the head of affairs at the breaking out of the rebellion, and holding the helm with so firm and loyal a hand, we believe the men who supported him in the field will be glad that this recognition of his worth has been given, and so beautiful and correct a portrait of Governor Olden presented.
In justice to himself and others, the publisher begs leave to make a statement, which if consistent would have been omitted: At the time Mr. Foster was preparing a work entitled New Jersey and the Rebellion, he obtained for reference the ms. Of Pyne's History of the First New Jersey Cavalry, which was mostly written in the field, and completed long before that work was projected. Those who have read the work alluded to will doubtless observe a similarity between that portion of it which gives some account of the Sixteenth Regiment (the First New Jersey Cavalry) and the complete history now for the first time published. This is accounted for by the fact that it was taken almost bodily, chapter headings and all, from the author's ms. Of this work.
