Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The History of White's, Vol. 1
The numerous writers on the social history of the last two hundred years have given very little attention to one of its most interesting features - Clubs and of Club life in England. And thus it happens that nearly all that has hitherto been written about White's, notwithstanding the prominent and important position among clubs it has always occupied, is contained in a couple of pages of a handbook to London, published nearly half-a-century ago. The approaching bi-centenary of the opening of White's Chocolate House, which preceded the foundation of the Club itself by a few years only, has been thought an appropriate time to put on record a fuller account of White's and its traditions. There is no lack of contemporary allusion to White's from the first. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
