The publication of this volume completes the series of lectures on the history of education given by Prof. Williams at Cornell university, and the first appear ance in English of histories of ancient and mediaeval education. Although issued after the author's death, the manuscript was SO careful and matured and exact that it has been easy to present his record just as he wrote it. In so doing the publisher feels that he has made a distinct and needed addition to educational literature.
