Though it is not usual to write the history of a living prince, the great distance which, in the present instance, permits the historian to speak with freedom, will serve as an excuse for the infringement of so just a rule, in the eyes of tho'e who may read the following sheets without prejudice. The writer has adhered to the strictest impartiality, in relating the exploits of the most famous conqueror India has beheld since the time of Thamas Kouli Khan; a prince very much superior to that usurper, as well for the extent of his genius as for the propriety of his conduct, which far exceeds that of the other Indian sovereigns.
