Excerpt: ... it be lost sight of, that very many of the boys who have passed through the band, and are now occupied in various trades to which they have been apprenticed, have followed up their music as a recreation with satisfaction to themselves, and to those with whom it is their lot to be placed. memoir of the founder. Captain Coram was born at Lyme Regis, in Dorsetshire, in the year 1668. He was a descendant of the Corhams, of Devonshire; and Kinterbury, in that county, was for several generations, the property and residence of the family. Of his baptism, there does not appear to be any record at Lyme Regis; and all that can be found in the registers relating to the family is the following: --"William, son of John Coram, Captain, was baptized at Lyme, April 29th, 1671." f There seems to be no doubt, therefore, that this "William" was a younger brother of "Thomas," the subject of this memoir, and consequently, that the latter, in devoting himself to the sea service, followed the occupation of his father. At Lyme Regis, which is a sea-port, there was carried-on, at the period in question, a-considerable coasting Vide Ilisdon's Chorographical Description of the County of Devont For this information the writer is indebted to Dr. Hodges, the present Vicar of Lyme Regis. and Newfoundland trade; and hence we may venture to account for the first direction of his course in maritime concerns. Of his early years there is no biographical notice extant; but it appears probable, that the ardent temperament which he exhibited through life, was too strong for the restraints of home and domestic ties, and that this, and his love of enterprise, caused him to be, even at the outset of his career, an independent member of his father's family.
