The attention of the British and Foreign Bible Society was directed to India, several years hefore the institntion of the Calcntta Auxiliary. At a meeting of the Committee in Loudon. July 23d, 1804, it was resolved that the China Suh-Committee, should he denomi'naled the Oriental Sub-Committee, and that they should 'open a Correspondence with gentlrmen in India, informing 'them of the establishment o the Society, and requesting 'their communications respecting the brat mrnns of promo'ling the objects of the institntion with regard lo the Eastern languages.' The following gentlemen in Calcntta were requested to form themselves into a Commiitee of Corresponding; G. uony Esq. (then wit-mher of Council) The Kev. Messrs. Brown and Buchanan. Chaplains; aud lao Rev. Messrs. Camy," Ward, aud Iurshman, Mis. A iionrieJ, of Serampore, and were desired to associate with themselves such other gentlemen in auy part of India, as the; might think proper. The letter conveying this request mait have heen received in India. early in the year 1805, and by the impulse it ayave to the Z-al of henevolent individuals, a new era f Christian activity may he said to have onuimeoced in this country. Various circumstances, indeed, comhined for some years to prevent the actual embodying of the Committee.
