Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Higher Criticism: An Outline of Modern Biblical Study

But little Biblical criticism existed in the Mid dle Ages. The revival of learning gave a new impulse to literary criticism; and Richard Simon, born in France in 1638, may be regarded as the founder of modern Biblical criticism; and Rich ard Bentley, of England, who came upon the literary stage a little later, formed an epoch in the history of general criticism, and has not been surpassed.
