This book focuses on the challenge to Third World countries of managing the problems resulting from the complex interrelationship between health and development. Most of these problems are often multifaceted, unforeseen, fuzzy and ill-understood. Practical solutions to them will require a multidisciplinary approach, involving an integration of the knowledge and expertise of academics, policy-makers and major health and development agencies at all levels. - - Accordingly, this book draws on the different viewpoints of policy-makers, development agencies and academics in the fields of medicine, medical geography, psychology, economics and education to examine in particular, issues of the dynamics of human health, disease and medicine in the Third World. These are discussed along the perspectives of environmental changes and health hazards and the challenge of the impact of westernisation of diet and lifestyles on health. In addition the overwhelming importance of education and the role of women in health and health care provision are highlighted. Aspects of drug use and health programmes for the disadvantaged groups in Third World countries are also discussed.
