Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The Harvey Lectures: Delivered Under the Auspices of the Harvey Society of New York, 1916-1917
IT was the idea of the founders of the Harvey Society to pre sent to the medical profession the results of laboratory investiga tion on various phases of problems which would contribute to the advancement of medical science and thereby tend to establish medical practice on a firmer and more rational basis.
The formal entrance of the United States into the European War has led to a demand upon the medical profession as a whole for things hitherto unattempted in prophylaxis and therapy. To meet this demand, the scientific laboratories of the country have been drawn upon to an unprecedented extent in order to furnish the necessary foundation of fact and discovery for the develop ment of the best and most rational medical treatment of the prob lems of the war. Although written before our formal entry into the con?ict, the twelfth volume of the series of Harvey Lectures, and the earlier volumes as well, contain matter of direct interest in connection with the medical problems arising from the war. In so far as the Harvey Lectures contribute in any way to the solu tion of the problems confronting us in the present emergency, the hope of the founders of the Society will be realized.
