Like all insects of its class, the gypsy moth passes through four different stages during its life history.

The Egg. - (figure The eggs are laid in July and August, in a mass of 400 to 500, covered with yellowish hairs from the body of the female. The individual mass is of an irregular oval shape, one and one-half by three-fourths inches, as shown natural Size in Figure 2, and is usually deposited on the bark of trees, but where abundant on fences, stones, buildings, etc.
